Educated at Moscow State University, qualified as Reader in German philology and the teacher of English. Until 1966 has been professor at the Chair of English of Donetsk State University, Ukraine, reading English phonology and teaching English phonetics and conversation to Ukrainian students.

Having been interested in the “music of speech” ever since studying at the vocational music school, carried out an experimental phonetic research on perceptual cues for the identification of intonation units (British English intonation material) at the Phonetic Laboratory of S. Petersburg State University and in 1980 was awarded PhD. Have since been trying to stick to the high standards of research established at the Chair and Laboratory of Phonetics by professors L.Zinder, L. Verbitskaya, N. Svetozarova, L.Bondarko.

In the early 80s was introduced to sociolinguistics to become later its devoted student. In 1996 started reading sociolinguistics for the Department of General Linguistics, Faculty of Philology of S. Petersburg State University; continued teaching English phonetics, grammar, listening comprehension to I- II-IV- year students of the Department.

Since 2003 has taught sociolinguistics to the various audiences of Oriental studies students, Intercultural communication students and others. I am in charge of the magistrate curriculum for Sociolinguistics at the Department of General Linguistics; I run a workshop on urban studies for under- and postgraduates of the Faculty as well as summer field practice.

I am a member of S.Petersburg Linguistic Society.

Special professional interests: new urban lects; interactional sociolinguistics; prosodic aspects of power and distance variability.

Other interests: translation (Nancy Ries. Russian Talk. Culture and Conversation during Pererstrojka. 1997, translated into Russian by N. Kulakova and myself, published in 2005); playing violin.
